Unless you live under a rock, you are under stress. Every day we have too many demands on our time. While stress can be a motivating factor, (think last minute work deadline) it can wear down your body.

The CDC has listed stress as causing about 90% of our diseases.

So what are we to do?

Here are 8 major signals that you are under stress and how you can deal with it.

1. You are Always Sick

When you are under constant stress, the increased cortisol levels at first help you manage. After a while, the cortisol levels in your body drain away and your immune system shuts down. You catch every virus or cold that comes along.

What to do?

After a particularly stressful time at work or with family, take time to rest. You must “recharge your batteries.”

2. You are having Trouble Concentrating

When you are worn out from stress, you cannot concentrate on simple things. You forget where you put your keys, or your boss’ name.

Deep breathing can help you reset your brain. A few deep, calming breathes increases blood flow to the brain so you can think better.

When you are under constant stress, your neck and back muscles never relax. This can cause you a stress headache. However, if your headache feels like a migraine or it wakes you up at night, see a doctor for medical treatment.

What to do?

It seems easy to say “don’t have stress,” but this is not realistic. If you get clearance from a doctor, you will probably feel better. Realizing that your headache is caused by stress rather than a brain tumor may help you relax and relaxing will relieve your headache.

4. You are having Constant Neck and Back Pain

The same tension in your neck and back that caused your headache is causing you to have back and neck pain. The tension causes muscle cramps and knots. They do not go away because you can never relax.

What to do?

When you have constant stress in your body, you should try to relax the muscles. Many techniques are available like yoga, meditation, swimming, and massage. Find some activity that you enjoy and keep your body limber.

When you are constantly worrying, you have trouble “turning off your brain” and getting to sleep. When you cannot stop worrying about things your subconscious mind wakes you up during the night to work on your problems, so you become sleep deprived.

What to do?

If this is an ongoing problem, talk to your doctor. You may have issues with depression. Try to write down your thoughts before bed so you won’t worry during the night. Also, cut down on caffeine and alcohol. Exercise has also been shown to help with sleep, but not right before bed.

If you are losing more than a handful of hair every day, you may be suffering from a skin disorder called “alopecia areata.” This disorder is caused by stress and makes the hair fall out in red patches all over the scalp.

What to do?

Reduce your stress and see a doctor. While the hair loss is most likely stress related, it could also be caused by a fungus, or bacterial infection. It might even be a sign of a thyroid disorder.

Go to the restroom! I know if sounds simple, but you need to stop and take a break periodically. Walk around, stretch your muscles, and empty your bladder.

What to do?

Relax and talk to your partner. When you have identified the stressors in your life and managed your stress, then your love life should improve. Don’t rely on some pill that will treat the symptoms, but not cause.

Now that you know the signs of stress, you should develop a plan to deal with it. You know the warning signs that you are under extreme stress. Heed the signs and work toward having a complete and satisfying life free of extra stress.
